The story behind the song – The Scream

The story behind the song - The Scream

The Scream was made in the middle of autumn while romanticizing that dying Finnish nature. We tuned the good old Telecaster to Drop C tuning and started to play around with these rhythmic high-gain riffs. Quite soon we noticed that these ”not so serious” metal elements worked pretty well with the electro layers and patterns we already had. After figuring out the arrangements for the band we wanted to add these striking orchestrations with nice accents and hooks. It felt necessary to mix that kind of new angle to the rolling riffs and bass drum rhythms. Elisa Järvelä’s epic violin was a clear choice to bring that melancholic chorus melody alive. After the trumpet player Mikko Pettinen said yes to the collaboration we were able to carry out our wild plan for that intsrumental C part - dialogue between horns and strings!

The power of contrast was very obvious thing as well at beginning of the writing process. We decided to add for example such a bombastic chorus after these verse parts with fragile and airy touch. We erased some stuff from the C part to keep the wall of sound fresh enough. By bringing those stylish horn and string elements into the spotlight we wanted to underline the cinematic side of the project and offer bigger roles for these wonderful quest musicians we were honored to play with. The old demo synths and electro programming were used again pretty much in the final version of The Scream. The octaver effect used in the guitar harmony part reminded of this electro vibe as well.

That scream FX echoing during the intro, chorus parts and finally during the outro was definitely the starting point for the song. After hearing this cold and quite creepy sound it was clear that something has to be done with it. Finally that one specific scream painted the soundscape for the song, wrote that diary like story and created a very strong association to an icon of modern art made by one Norwegian Expressionist.

Tarina laulun takaa - The Scream

Kappaleessa kaikuva huuto-efekti pakotti punomaan laulun ympärilleen. Se maalasi maiseman, kirjoitti päiväkirjamaisen ajankuvauksen hiljalleen kuihtuvasta syksyisestä maailmasta ja synnytti voimakkaan assosiaation erääseen ekspressionismin merkkiteokseen.
