The story behind the song - Mayday

This song is another based on true story kind of thing to EGiM collection. Mayday is an abstract adventure through the world of unexpected turn of events million miles away from home. The name Mayday collects a few meaningful details together too. Of course it refers to our band’s name but at the same time it supports that thematic emergency aspect behind the Fallmarks. It’s also the date when all these things really happened, on May 1.

Mayday is such an interesting mix ’cause there’s a clear difference between the mood of the music and the lyrics. We ended up to combine these two worlds after realizing there’s definitely hope in the lyrics too. This bright and light peace of music may sound weird for someone but for us it feels very normal to be honest. Mayday is a natural continuation in the field of this cinematic soundtrack rock when you have this nice freedom to play with very different kind of shades and sounds. The strong orchestration, the wide range of vocals and for example just a little extra guitar flavor are these good old elements of EGiM recipe. This time we played around with key changes too. And don’t forget to concentrate to that cheesy ”sport news” riff as an ending of the song!

Already at the beginning of Fallmarks production we had a strong vision about using a real brass section on the new material. Mayday was straight away the song to bring this idea alive. There were these strong big band influences and vibes from the legendary Ginga Nagareboshi Gin soundtrack already on the first demo version of the song. Luckily we had this great collaboration with the multi-talent and trumpet player Mikko Pettinen from UMO Jazz Orchestra. The very first arrangement of Mayday was done in Michigan by Eetu Ahola where he was jamming this song on piano in the lobby of Finlandia University. The post-production including the arranging, final composing etc. was done together during the dark and desperate November in Finland.

Tarina laulun takaa - Mayday

Mayday on paitsi olennainen osa Fallmarksin hätähuuto-tematiikkaa myös lisäys EGiMin ”perustuu tositapahtumiin” -tarinakokoelmaan. Abstraktiin muotoon nivottu seikkailullinen kertomus kätkee sisäänsä kuvauksen elämän raadollisuudesta, odottamattomista käänteistä ja voimattomuuden tunteesta pitkien välimatkojen maailmassa. Nimi Mayday kokoaa muutamia osuvia yksityiskohtia viitaten mm. kansainväliseen hätämerkkiin, toukokuiseen tapahtuma-aikaan ja yhtyeemme nimeen.

Kappaletta puettiin tietoisella ristiriidalla kepeän sävellyksen säestäessä pohjimmiltaan hyvin tummanpuhuvaa tarinaa. Mayday näyttäytyykin ulospäin ehkä epätyypillisenä ratkaisuna rockbändinä itseään tituleeraavalle ryhmälle. Kappale on meille kuitenkin täysin luonnollinen jatkumo ja yksi analyyttisen musailun uusista lopputuotteista. Vahva orkestrointi, laajat vokaalipuolen sävytykset ja esimerkiksi kitaroiden hyvin harkittu efektimäinen rooli jatkaa EGiMille tunnusomaista linjaa. Tällä kertaa pelailtiin myös sävellajien muutoksilla eikä mainitsematta sovi jättää kappaleen päättävää juustoista Urheiluruutu-filliä!

Jo Fallmarks-tuotannon alkuvaiheessa visioimme oikeiden torvien sointia uusiin kappaleisiin. Maydayn ilmestyminen jo valmiin materiaalin keskelle vain nostatti hanketta ja niinpä juuri tästä kappaleesta päätettiin tehdä se vahvimmin brassailtu. Onneksemme mm. UMO Jazz Orchestrassa musisoiva trumpetisti Mikko Pettinen suostui vierailijaksi projektiin samalta istumalta! Maydayn referenssit poukkoilivat erinäisestä big band -ajattelusta ikisuosikki Hopeanuolen (Ginga Nagareboshi Gin) soundtrackiin. Maydayn raamit on koottu kasaan Michiganissa, Finladia Universityn aulapianolla Aholan Eetun toimesta. Lopputuotanto ja instrumentointi hoidettiin tutulla kaavalla koti-Suomen marraskuussa maalaillen.
